Introduction to Web Application Security

Application Security is one of the most challenging engineering problems a developer will encounter.

Web Application Security is part of information security.

What is Security?

Policies, procedures, and technical measures used to prevent unauthorized access, alteration, theft or physical damage in data.

Security means protecting information and information systems from unauthorized access, use disclosure, modification in order to provide confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA).

Fundamental Principles include:

1. Identification

2. Authentication

3. Authorization

Identification

Identification describes a method of ensuring that a subject is the entity it claims to be. E.g., user name or an account no.

When issuing Identification values to users or subjects, ensure that:-

1. Each value should be unique, for user accountability.

2. A standard naming scheme should be followed.

3. The values should not be shared between the users.

Authentication

Authentication is the method of proving the subjects identity. E.g. password and PIN.

There are 3 general factors for authenticating a subject.

1. Something a person has: E.g. Passwords, PIN-least expensive, least secure.

2. Something a person has: E.g. Access Card, key – expensive, secure

3. Something a person: E.g. Biometrics –most expensive, most secure.

For a strong authentication to be in process, it must include wo out of the three authentication factors – also referred to as two factor authentication.

Authorization

Authorization is the method of controlling/allowing the access of objects by the subject.

Example

A user cannot delete a particular file after logging into the system.

Why we need to learn Web Application Security

Web apps and website are prone to security attacks, and that’s why you need to find a way to protect your website from any issues that can arise.

1. Secure the web environment (present web server bugs).

2. Validate user input (present XSS and injection attacks).

3. Avoid third-party scripts and CSS.

4. Use encryption (protect data, prevent mixed content bugs).a

5. Use the right authentication.

6. Authorize requests (present XSRF, XSSI etc.)
